Avian

Syreena was both zookeeper and main attraction in her master's menagerie of rare and wondrous creatures. Her wings were clipped annually to prevent escape, with the added threat of pinioning should she continue trying. But her molt came early this year, and the master had failed to notice her growing flight feathers. One dark night, praying to the Almighty that her wings would support her, she flitted to the top of the wall and leapt. It took a lot of effort to remain aloft, and she was rusty at flying, but once she caught the updraft, it all came back. Soaring through the darkness, she fled the city, flying north until morning. Exhausted, she landed in a crouch on a garden path somewhere. Syreena knew she had come far, but not far enough. She had to reach the boundaries of the empire before someone caught her and returned her to the master for punishment. Just a moment's rest and a quick hunt, then she would fly north again, seeking freedom in another land.
